General Motors Issues Urgent Fire Risk Recall for 62,468 Trucks
General Motors (GM) has announced a critical safety recall affecting more than 62,000 heavy-duty trucks due to a severe fire risk that can occur even when the vehicle is parked. The recall encompasses 62,468 model year 2019-2024 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty trucks, specifically the 4500 HD, 5500 HD, and 6500 HD lines.

Technical Defect and Hazard
The fire hazard is attributed to a defect within the brake pressure sensor assembly. This component may leak brake fluid into the brake pressure switch, which can subsequently cause an electrical short circuit. This electrical short can overheat the circuit, significantly increasing the risk of an under-hood fire. The danger of fire persists whether the truck is being driven or is completely shut off and parked.
Immediate Safety Advisory for Owners
In response to the potential for fire while parked, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and General Motors have issued an immediate safety warning to all affected owners.
- Parking Instruction: Owners must park recalled vehicles outdoors and a considerable distance away from any buildings or other structures until the mandatory repair has been completed.
- Driving Precaution: Drivers should exercise extreme caution, noting that the fire risk is present at all times.
Recall Remedy and Notification
GM dealers have been instructed to execute the necessary repair free of charge to the owner. The corrective action involves replacing the faulty brake pressure switch wire harness to eliminate the point of fluid intrusion and prevent the resulting electrical short. Vehicle owners are scheduled to receive notification from GM outlining the steps for scheduling the no-cost repair.
